Maternal Mental Health and Suicide: Addressing the Most Common Complications of Pregnancy and Childbirth

Maternal mental health conditions -- primarily anxiety and depression -- are the most common complications of pregnancy and childbirth, affecting 1 in 5 childbearing individuals or 800,00 new parents each year in the United States. Tragically, suicide and overdose combined are the leading cause of death for women in the first year following pregnancy. Speakers will share their experiences with maternal mental health conditions and discuss programs and policies to best support pregnant and postpartum people experiencing mental health conditions with a particular focus on efforts to better serve individuals who face racial and economic inequities.
