Vacancy Announcement - Director, Division of Neurotoxicology

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR) located in Jefferson, AR is looking for an experienced senior-level scientist with management experience to serve as its Director for the Division of Neurotoxicology. 

NCTR conducts research to address specific high-priority issues to identify/quantify neurotoxicity related to FDA-regulated products, develops, and validates quantitative biomarkers of neurotoxicity, and identifies biological pathways of neurotoxicity.  The Division of Neurotoxicology (DNT) focuses on increasing FDA’s understanding neurotoxic outcomes to provide opportunities for improved risk assessments as well as possible new approaches for diagnosis.

The Division Director of Neurotoxicology is responsible for the daily operations of the DNT.  This includes managing, organizing, planning, and directing the scientific research programs.  The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge and experience in research pertaining to quantitative biomarkers of neurotoxicity; in vitro and in vivo models including zebrafish, rodent, and nonhuman primate to compare results to humans. The incumbent will report directly to the Deputy Director for Research and provide expert advice and counsel, in the area of neurotoxicology.  The Division Director meets regularly with scientists and other top-level officials at NCTR, the FDA, and other related agencies to provide scientific guidance as well as represents NCTR on committees/meetings in both national and international professional societies.  Provides scientific expertise and leadership to manage and direct scientific studies through the Division’s scientific, professional, and support personnel.

The incumbent shall provide scientific leadership and be responsible for organizing and directing the research programs of the Division and related disciplines.  This includes full technical and administrative responsibility for formulating, staffing, managing, and coordinating the Division’s highly sophisticated research programs. Develops and prepares intermediate and long-range research plans focusing and promoting NCTR missions, contracts, and funding requirements.  Conducts in-depth program appraisals and evaluation of research results to ensure optimum effectiveness, recommending program changes when needed. In addition, the Division Director publishes reports on scientific findings and coordinates research with leading scientists in the area of neuroscience and neurotoxicology.

The Division Director creates and fosters a climate conducive to recruitment and retention of outstanding research scientists.   Serves on review boards, scientific societies, and conducts scientific review responsibilities of scholarly manuscripts and proposals. Provides leadership to scientific organizations and societies that provide a scientific exchange opportunity for NCTR staff.  The incumbent is also expected to publish research results in appropriate scientific peer-reviewed journals with high impact factors.

Position Location: Jefferson, Arkansas (about 50 miles south of Little Rock)
