SOT Offers State of the Science Supporting Regulatory Decision-Making in Developmental Neurotoxicology at FDA

The Society of Toxicology is pleased to announce the next colloquium presented in conjunction with the FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN). “State of the Science Supporting Regulatory Decision-Making in Developmental Neurotoxicology” will be October 12, 2016, from 8:30 AM-1:00 PM in Wiley Auditorium on the CFSAN campus in College Park, Maryland. The series presents scientific information that is high-quality, cutting-edge, future-oriented toxicological science to provide a well-grounded foundation to inform the work of FDA employees. Open to the public to attend in person or via webcast, these events are not a public forum for discussion of toxicology regulatory issues.

Development of the nervous system is a complex process that is critically important for normal function and it is vulnerable to both endogenous and exogenous factors. There is increasing awareness among scientists and regulators that neurodevelopment is a critical window of susceptibility for childhood and adult-onset diseases. A growing concern among the general public is that exposures to some environmental factors, dietary components or consumer products may contribute to neurodevelopmental decrements. Novel experimental approaches and scientific concepts are being developed to address the need for more informative and comprehensive testing for the potential developmental neurotoxicity effects of chemicals.

We welcome participation from our colleagues who are members of the Teratology Society. 

The colloquium is open to the public to attend in person or via webcast.

  • Zebrafish as an Alternative Species for Developmental Testing That Can Provide Hazard Identification and Mechanistic Information, Randall T. Peterson, Harvard University, Boston, MA
  • In Vitro Approaches to Screening Compounds for Developmental Neurotoxicity Hazard, Ellen Fritsche, University of Düsseldorf, Düsseldorf, Germany
  • Adverse Outcome Pathways for Developmental Neurotoxicity, Anna K. Price, ECVAM, Ispra, Italy

These talks will be followed with a roundtable discussion moderated by Timothy Shafer, US EPA. Questions from the audience on-site and participating in the webcast are encouraged.
