University of Missouri-Columbia Research Reactor (MURR) Center is an established laboratory for trace element analysis (e.g., cadmium, mercury, selenium, arsenic) in biological specimens (e.g., blood, serum, plasma, urine, tissue). The MURR Center has five laboratories that are fully equipped for the sample preparation and analysis of trace-elements via instrumental neutron activation analysis, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and stable isotope analysis by multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. University of Missouri also has one of the top Family and Community Medicine Department in the country with a vivant health care system serving mid-Missourians.
We seek candidates who plan to expand their research career as a trace-metal/mineral environmental epidemiologist. The primary responsibilities of this position are to develop research studies that address important issues in population-based occupational, environmental, and public health associated with trace-element/mineral exposure. Additional work will involve analyzing collected data, drafting manuscripts for peer-reviewed journal submission, and participating in grant proposal submissions. The fellow will receive direct mentorship from Dr. Jane McElroy (epidemiology) and Dr. John Brockman (analytical chemistry).
Candidates have completed doctoral training in epidemiology, population-based occupational, environmental health or related field with a strong quantitative focus. This position will be for a one year term, renewable for a second year, based upon performance and a mutual desire to continue the appointment. The ideal candidate will have strong writing, quantitative, and communication skills, and the ability to think creatively about research. The candidate selected for this position must meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States through the period of employment. Position is available for immediate filling.
