Dear Members,

With a heavy heart I am writing to report that Dr. Robert L. Brent passed away on Friday, February 26th at the age of 94. Dr. Brent was a charter member of the Teratology Society, now the Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention, and served as the Society’s President in 1967-1968. He was actively involved in our Society and regularly attended our annual meetings until recent years. Dr. Brent’s impact on the field, on families, and on his students is far-reaching and long-lasting. He received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, including the prestigious National Academy of Medicine Gustav O. Lienhard Award in 2015. His impact on the field and on the Society was eloquently captured by Dr. Rich Miller in a recent paper in our journal, Birth Defects Research, which I encourage you all to read.

Dr. Brent’s enthusiasm to serve, his commitment to the Society, and his lifelong accomplishments in the field will be remembered forever.

We look forward to honoring Dr. Brent during the Society’s virtual 61st Annual Meeting in June.

Respectfully,

Elise Madison Lewis, PhD

President, Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention
