Open Call for Projects and Investigators for a Competitive Renewal of CIFASD

NIAAA has published Notices of Intent to Publish a Funding Opportunity announcements for the continuation of the Collaborative Initiative on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (CIFASD). In preparation of these forthcoming competitive renewal funding announcements, Dr. Edward Riley, PI of the Administrative Core of the current NIAAA-funded CIFASD, is soliciting potential new and continuing research projects. Research projects across all phases of the lifespan are appropriate and while the majority of the current projects utilize clinical populations, basic science projects are welcome. CIFASD supports NIH’s commitment to diversity, see NOT OD 20-031, and encourages proposals that enhance both the diversity of consortium PIs and research.

If you are interested in having a U01 research or UH2 developmental/pilot project (see links for known details including anticipated eligible organizations) considered for the consortium Dr. Riley is assembling, please submit a brief 1-page proposal to cifasd@gmail.com by April 30, 2021 to receive priority review containing these components:

  • A brief description of your proposed research project;
  • An explanation of its fit with current CIFASD projects or goals (https://cifasd.org) if any; and
  • An outline of your current resources, such as research subject pools, animals and equipment, and any of our current CIFASD resources you would need to utilize to complete your proposed research.

U01 Research Initiative Details - NIAAA seeks to fund a set of U01 applications with the goal of addressing urgent and high impact unmet needs in the FASD field in four areas: case identification/diagnosis, intervention, mechanistic understanding, and prevention. In the area of case identification/diagnosis, research of interest broadly includes improving early identification capability, accuracy and reliability of existing diagnosis schemes, and access to validated tools for diverse populations. Under the area of intervention, priorities include research to develop and validate intervention approaches targeting multiple domains and having long term benefit for diverse populations. In the area of mechanistic understanding, areas of research should address high impact questions and must have near-term potential for translation. In the area of prevention, research of interest includes proposals to design innovative approaches to reduce alcohol exposed pregnancies, including strategies to mitigate stigma associated with alcohol use during pregnancy and in women of childbearing age, and to develop intervention approaches based on a better understanding of nutritional, environmental, and socioeconomic risk and resilience factors.

UH2 Research Initiative Details - Projects will serve as the developmental/pilot project component of the CIFASD consortium. This component provides a mechanism for research ideas of a high-risk/high impact and the inclusion of new recruitment sites. UH2 awardees will be encouraged to establish mutually beneficial, collaborative relationships with other research projects (U01) and/or cores (U24) of the CIFASD consortium. Among the areas of FASD research encouraged in this initiative are those aimed to identify FASD cases early and accurately, improve interventions to mitigate FASD outcomes, enhance basic and mechanistic understanding of alcohol teratogenesis aimed at accelerated translation, and reduce prenatal alcohol exposure and the incidence of FASD.
