National Postdoc Appreciation Week Events - September 20-24

National Postdoc Appreciation Week is coming up the week of September 20-24. Below is a list of virtual events which are open to anyone regardless of NPA membership status.

Join us in celebrating the 12th annual National Postdoc Appreciation Week (NPAW), September 20 - 24, with a multi-institutional, nationwide, virtual program. For the second year in a row, Gallagher Insurance and Proteintech join us as NPAW sponsors. This year, we are focusing on the theme of “I Am A Postdoc,” in an effort to recognize and celebrate the broad individuality of postdocs while highlighting their interests both at and outside of work.

  • The Honorable Sethuraman Panchanathan, director of the National Science Foundation, will welcome all to this year’s event. Robert T. Pennock, Ph.D., University Distinguished Professor, Michigan State University, president, Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society, will follow with opening remarks at the keynote event, "" on Monday, September 20 at 1 p.m. ET. Keith Micoli, Ph.D., assistant dean of postdoctoral affairs at New York University School of Medicine, will offer highlights the identities of our postdocs and their contributions to society, as well as providing career planning.
  • Monday will also be the start of “Be a PI (Postdoc Investigator): A Social Scavenger Hunt.” Test your PI skills by seeing how many items can you complete or find during National Postdoc Appreciation Week.
  • NPAW continues Tuesday with networking at 2 p.m. ET during “Connecting for Career Success.” Join us to meet former postdocs who have found success in their chosen professions and learn about their career journeys.
  • On Wednesday, complementing the events of the first two days, the Postdoc Academy will present a hands-on workshop along the theme of “I Am a Postdoc” with practical training on finding preferred career paths. “Centering Your Identity and Interests While Preparing for Your Next Career Step” is scheduled for Wednesday, September 22 at 1 p.m. ET.

In addition to these events, the NPA is collecting information about NPAW events organized by institutions, associations and organizations that are virtual and are open to all postdocs. If your institution is organizing such an event, we invite you to submit your event’s information in our form no later than Wednesday, September 15. The full schedule of events during NPAW will be available on the event calendar.

We are also looking for current and former postdocs to submit short, 1 min or less, videos to be used as part of NPAW and beyond to emphasize the diversity of postdocs in the United States and the many careers they pursue. This request continues on the theme of “I Am A Postdoc” that the Postdoc Academy started in 2019. For examples of videos that can be submitted please refer to this compilation video and one from Twitter.

Lastly, please spread the work about this celebration of postdocs. Find promotional images at the bottom of this email and feel free to share them widely. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

We are looking forward to recognizing the contribution of our postdocs to society during 2021 NPAW.
